CAT Exam Pattern 2026: Sections, Timing & Marking Explained
By Prachi Priya Jha 13 June 2026

CAT exam pattern, explained simply
CAT is a computer-based test, usually across slots on a single day.
The three sections
- VARC - Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension
- DILR - Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning
- QA - Quantitative Ability
Each section has its own 40-minute timer (120 minutes total). You cannot move between sections once a section starts.
Marking
- +3 for a correct answer
- -1 for a wrong MCQ
- No negative marking on TITA (type-in) questions
Bottom line: know the structure cold, and practise in the real interface so the timer and palette feel familiar on exam day.
