CAT Exam Pattern 2026: Sections, Timing & Marking Explained

CAT exam pattern, explained simply

CAT is a computer-based test, usually across slots on a single day.

The three sections

  1. VARC - Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension
  2. DILR - Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning
  3. QA - Quantitative Ability

Each section has its own 40-minute timer (120 minutes total). You cannot move between sections once a section starts.

Marking

  • +3 for a correct answer
  • -1 for a wrong MCQ
  • No negative marking on TITA (type-in) questions

Bottom line: know the structure cold, and practise in the real interface so the timer and palette feel familiar on exam day.
